These will be the vocabulary definitions that will appear on your quiz on Friday, 9/14 or Mon, 9/24. Remember that the definition will appear on the quiz and you will be given a word bank to write in the word next to the defintions. 

Vocab #1 

  1. analysis : a careful examination of a literary work 
  2. compare: comparison: to look at similarities 
  3. connotation: the implied meaning of a word; typically slang
  4. denotation: the direct definition 
  5. discomfort:  make uncomfortable or uneasy
  6. eagerness:  marked by enthusiastic or impatient desire
  7. imply;implies;implied:  to indirectly express an idea
  8. inform:  to make known
  9. interpret:  to explain or tell the meaning of 
  10. melancholy:  A deep, pensive, and long-lasting sadness.
  11. nostalgia : a sentimental yearning for thehappiness of a former place or time

Vocab #2 

  1. objective :  not influenced by personal feelings, interpretations, or prejudice; based on facts; unbiased:
  2. optimistic : having a positive outlook on life and situations
  3. perspective :  a mental view or outlook
  4. persuade :  to cause to believe; convince 
  5. subjective : a biased outlook 
  6. diction: word choice

Vocab #3 

conflict : a fight, argument, disagreement or simply opposition in which 2 sides are present.

allusion : an indirect reference to a historical or literary person, place or thing

credible: able to be believed; convincing.

foreshadowing: the use of hints or clues to suggest what will happen later in literature.

 characterization : method used by a writer to develop a character. The method includes (1) showing the character's appearance, (2) displaying the character's actions, (3) revealing the character's thoughts, (4) letting the character speak, and (5) getting the reactions of others.
